So, as of yesterday, I’ve officially been on a gym program that I’ve stuck to for a week. Quite frankly, I’m proud of the fact that I can wake up at 6:30 three times a week so I can go to the gym for an hour. It’s not one of those things I’m doing to brag about, but I came to realize recently enough that I’m terribly out of shape and I need to do something about it. It seemed like the best thing I could do for my health was to make a pointed effort to go to the gym as often as I can. Much props to those of you that go more often and even earlier than I do and have for some years now.

Signs

So, I’ve been in classes for very roughly a week now, and I came to an interesting realization. The most entertaining engineering professors I’ve had have taught some form of Fluid mechanics. It might be a sign. It might be that the professors themselves are good because they enjoy the subject matter. Either way, I’m good with it.

Of course, I shouldn’t take the fact that the professors are entertaining as an absolute omen that I should go into fluids, but it IS one of those subjects that forces you to see the world in a different light. And, folks, I have to say, it’s quite something. I can’t talk too much about it, because we’d get caught up in engineering jargon, but, as my previous fluids professor was always eager to say, fluids are everywhere and are applicable to so very many things. Maybe that’s why I finished my intermediate fluid mechanics homework a week before it was due and look forward to that class every Tuesday and Thursday.

More Changes

As many of you know, I just turned twenty-one recently. Now, do I feel any different? A little, yeah. Even beyond being able to drink now, I realized that I couldn’t get myself any video games for my birthday this year. The thought of it didn’t leave me very satisfied. I didn’t want to get any liquor, because that didn’t feel right, either. Too cliché. I finally landed on some movies and books and it felt right. That and a toy for my little brother. Now that that’s past, I think it’s time to head back to school.

I’ve had my fun at home, but there are certain things I can’t do here that I can there. Rock Band 3 parties for instance. There are more, but typing them out would leave my fingers inoperative for a long time. So, with that, I think I’ll just say, until next time, keep your sanity serenaded.

With Age Comes Indecision

As some of you know, my birthday is coming up soon, so I’ve been spending time thinking about what I want to get myself. Recently, I came to the realization, that I really don’t know what I want to get. Well, that’s not completely true, there are a lot of things I’d like to get, but I have no need for, so why should I? And, as I sat and thought about it some more, I realized this same thing has happened to my parents.

Over the past couple of years, my parents have realized that they don’t need to have gifts anymore, so they’ve more or less stopped giving one to the other. That’s happening now, but I’m still young and arrogant, so I want something. I eventually came to a decision to get some movies and books, but I also decided that I need to do something more. I’m not one hundred percent sure what that will be right now, but I’ll bring it up next time.

Finally Home

Well, after a really fun week of finals, I’m glad to say, I’m finally on break. I can put my feet up, watch TV on my computer, write my stories, and play video games. Granted, I did those at school, but I can do it without having to worry about assignments.

But the best part? When I wake up, I’m greeted by a white fluffy ball of happiness with a wagging tail. I don’t get to see my dog, Plato that often, being in school and all. So, when I’m home, I’m always appreciative of him.

That dog has done wonders in keeping my sanity serenaded. I hope you all have something as well. So, until next time, keep your sanity serenaded.

Counting Down the Days

You’ll have to excuse me for not updating as much this semester. It’s been rough, what with all the classes and projects and homework and what have you. Last week, I couldn’t make the time because I needed to write three papers, finish some assignments, and prepare for finals, all while getting better from the flu. But now, I am better and now it is Finals week, so I’m going to keep it brief before I get back to studying. I’m optimistic, but Finals are still Finals. There should be a bigger post next week, so, until then, keep your sanity serenaded

Promotion

Yesterday we had elections for CUB (the Clarkson Union Board) to fill the executive board and chair positions for next year. I’m proud to say that, after sputtering like a fool, I managed to get the position of Treasurer as well as the Chair of Entertainment and Co-Chair of Bar and Open Mic Night.

The elections were mildly harrowing for me. I’d never done anything like it before for any club I’ve been in and, as a writer, I detest knowing I’m supposed to prepare a speech, but not knowing what to say. I tried to make it informal but it ended up jamming my foot down my throat so far, I was in danger of choking on my own femur. I feel a little embarrassed about some of the things said, because I had no idea what I was trying to say for some of them, but I learned something valuable about myself: If I need to speak about myself in a setting like that, I need to have something prepared in advance.

Though, all things considered, I made a complete idiot of myself, got some laughs, and got an executive position in one of the only clubs I’ve ever really enjoyed being in. That counts as a victory in my book. That’s all I have for this week, so, until next time, keep your sanity serenaded.

NACA

Once again, I apologize for skipping last week, but the reason for that was also the reason for this post. Over the last weekend, I was privileged enough to go to a NACA conference. NACA stands for the National Association for Campus Activities, and the conference was all about different acts and entertainers that we could bring to the school. It was a whole lot of fun, I got to meet a lot of great people ranging from musicians to magicians to escape artists to comedians to mind readers and beyond. A lot of them were amazing and a good deal of them, no names, were less so.It was a lot like a career fair, except instead of going around looking for people to hire you, you go around looking for people to hire. It was a nice reversal, and a lot of them were really great people. They even gave free stuff to us.

It was a great weekend and I look forward to doing it again. Even if it is murder on my feet, since we had to walk everywhere. I think that’s all I have for this week, so, until next time, keep your sanity serenaded.

Growing Up

Before I get going, I’m going to apologize for my lack of post from last week. Between Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday last week, I got about 10 hours of sleep doing work. It was not fun times, but last week, I realized something. I’m starting to grow up a little.

Now, I’ll be the first one to admit that I’m childish at times and immature occasionally, but I feel that I am mature enough to know when to stop. And to know when I’m starting to become more of an adult. Perfect example, last Sunday, my mother was explaining the weather conditions back at home and she said something along the lines, “I don’t think too many people are going to go out tomorrow.” Prompting me to ask, “What’s tomorrow?” Yes, I’d forgotten that Halloween was the next day. I celebrated by watching The Nightmare Before Christmas. Again.

But it doesn’t stop there. Maybe it’s growing up or maybe it’s the engineering classes and just generally being in charge of my own money, but I’m starting to notice something about watching action movies and TV shows. When I was a kid and a building blew up, I didn’t care. It was cool! I was so mesmerized by what I was watching that nothing else really mattered, insofar as the show was concerned, of course. Now, I see some superhero tear up half a city chasing a supervillain and my first thought is usually, “NOOOOO! That’s going to be so expensive to fix!”

Does this disturb me? A little. Is it enough that I feel that I should be truly worried? Not at all. I’m just starting to realize that there is, in fact, a fusion of being a kid and being a grown-up. Incidentally, if any of you reading this happen to notice yourselves thinking the same, or similar, thoughts while watching a TV show, feel free to put a comment down there if you feel like it.

Homecoming 2011

So, this past weekend was Homecoming and Parent’s Weekend up here at Clarkson. Despite the fact that my parents couldn’t make it, I still had a great time. I worked all the CUB events and got some phenomenal experience in the process, as well as having fun just watching them.

To start was an Open Mic event with just one person playing for a couple hours. Granted, that doesn’t really constitute an “open mic”, per se, but it was the same set up and it didn’t matter because the guy was great at what he was doing. After him was the “Mr. Clarkson Pageant”. Now, that was by far one of the most entertaining things I’ve ever seen. It was about 20 guys doing the most ridiculous things imaginable ranging from swing dancing to the “Jungle Book” to stripping a robe open to reveal “Sesame Street” boxers. Words cannot even begin to fully describe the hilarity. The hilarity, of course, continuing to the pep rally the next day that had people doing very much the same things, although a little more family friendly. Perfect example: Having a mock rap battle between two of the school’s more famous professors. And then, to top it off, we had the world’s tenth best comedian in the world; Josh Blue. The man was funny and it was a good end to nice weekend.

But, I still think the best part was learning more and more about how to set up the CUB equipment. Over the past month, my knowledge has increased almost exponentially. I think it shows that I really did find the right club to join. Even if it took a while. So, until next week, keep your sanity serenaded.
